Winnie The Pooh Royalties Dispute

The Slesinger family, who owns the US marketing rights to Winnie The Pooh, and Disney have been in a dispute for the last thirteen years over royalties. Stephen Slesinger Inc. claims that Disney owes the family millions of dollars in royalties on Pooh movies released on DVD.

In March, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charles McCoy effectively put an end to the lengthy suit, ruling that Slesinger obtained confidential documents from Disney offices and trash. The documents could not be introduced as evidence to establish the claim. Judge McCoy then dismissed the case with prejudice, ruling that no further suits on the royalties claim can be filed.

The Slesinger family recently indicated that an appeal will be filed on the basis that they asked McCoy to recuse himself from the case because a Disney legal consultant is associated with the judge’s prior law firm.
