Large Truck Fatalities Decrease in 2008

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports that in 4,229 people died 2008 in accidents involving large trucks. While that number is unacceptably large, it is a 12% reduction in large truck-related deaths from 2007. The decrease in fatalities involving large trucks was part of an overall 16% decrease in motor vehicle deaths. It is too early to tell whether the fewer deaths is the start of a trend or just a one-year phenomenon related to the difficult economy and fewer miles driven nationally than in recent years. Both sides in the ongoing debate on proposed legislation to allow even larger and triple-rigged trucks on the national highway system, can be expected to use the 2008 fatality data to support their positions.
