The American Trucking Association announced that on June 9, 2009, it will unveil an 18-point safety plan for the trucking industry. The organization, a leader of major trucking companies, held details of the safety initiative close to the vest. I hope that the ATA weighs the safety of the non-trucking driving public heavily into its plans. Giant rigs are a major source of fatalities and serious accidents on the interstate system - not to mention a bane to driving enjoyment. Too often, trucking industry representatives with their influential lobbyists, oppose laws and regulations that will actually enhance safety on our highways. A measure of skepticism until the 18 points are released, is realistic.
