Nashua Children’s Home Case
When the Nashua Children’s Home attempted to open a transitional community residential program for older girls with learning and emotional disabilities preparing to leave NHC’s programs and begin life on their own, a group of neighbors objected.
A neighborhood organization was formed by NCH opponents, and the opposition became aggressive. The organization's lawful petitioning activities were combined with harassing and intimidating conduct by certain individuals. Nashua Children’s Home filed a complaint with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development accompanied by a request that the Justice Department file suit if necessary against the neighborhood group. HUD sent an investigator to Nashua. With HUD's assistance, all illegal behavior was stopped and opposition to the Nashua Children's Home program ended.
